woodworm problem

Woodworm creates serious problems in your property over time weakening wooden structures. When the larva hatch woodworm is the larva of any wood-boring beetle, an infestation of woodworm can cause serious damage as they start to feed and bore into wood.

The most important thing is to spot it in the early stages of the infestation. If you think you have woodworm and want a professional opinion please get in touch.

The Adult beetles are around 4-6mm in length and brown in colour. The female beetles’ eggs are white lemon shaped eggs less then 1mm long she can produce around 20 eggs which are deposited in suitable conditions most likely dead timber with a lot of cracks or previously created holes, as this will provide a safe spot for the egg to hatch. In normal conditions, the egg will hatch within 6 to 10 days but can take 3 to 4 weeks.

Once the larva emerges from the egg it will start to feed on the wood and burrow inside, the larva part of the life cycle is the longest as it can go on for many months and indeed years. woodworm larvae are not exposed to the same humidity and temperature levels as in the wild, hence, it requires more time to transform from a larva to an adult beetle. For that reason, you are more likely to find these insects in buildings with excess moisture.

Just before pupation the larva makes their way to the surface of the timber. Pupation takes around 10-14 days and from the pupa emerge the adult beetle which gnaw through the thin layer of wood leaving the round emergence holes which are around 1.5mm in diameter.

As soon as the beetles leave their safe place, they search for a mating partner. Males have only 3 to 4 days to serve their sole purpose - successfully mate with as many females as possible. On the other hand, once out, female adult beetles have around 2 weeks to find a perfect spot for the new batch of eggs to grow. And that’s how the life cycle continues
